Biography

Sugar Minott was a Jamaican musician who made significant contributions to the reggae and dancehall music scenes throughout his career. Born Lincoln Barrington Minott on May 25, 1956, in Kingston, Jamaica, he began his musical journey as a selector on the Sound of Silence Keystone sound system, and later established his own Gathering of Youth system.

In 1969, Minott joined The African Brothers, a group that also included Tony Tuff and Derrick Howard. The group released several singles in the early 1970s, showcasing the influence of the Rastafari movement on the Jamaican music scene. After the group disbanded, Minott began working with producer Clement “Coxsone” Dodd at Studio One, where he honed his skills as a singer, guitarist, and percussionist.

Minott's ability to write new songs over existing rhythms set him apart from other artists and helped establish him as a pioneer of the emerging dancehall style. His debut album, Live Loving, released in 1978, solidified his reputation and paved the way for future success. Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Minott released a series of successful albums and singles, including hits like “Good Thing Going” and “Herbman Hustling.”

In addition to his own music career, Minott also founded Black Roots Records and the Youth Promotion organization, which aimed to support young singers from disadvantaged backgrounds. He ran the Youthman Promotion sound system, providing opportunities for up-and-coming artists to showcase their talent.

Tragically, Sugar Minott passed away on July 10, 2010, at the age of 54, due to undisclosed health issues. His legacy continues to live on through his music and the impact he had on the reggae community. In 2012, a charity concert was held in his honor, with proceeds going towards helping local communities in need. Sugar Minott's influence on reggae music and his dedication to supporting young artists make him a beloved figure in the genre's history.
