I see a red door
And I want it painted black
No colours anymore
I want them to turn black
I see the maidens fair
Dressed in their summer clothes
And I must bow my head
Until my darkness goeth

I see the lonely chapel
‘Tis all painted black
With flowers and my love
Both never to come back
The townsfolk cross themselves
And swiftly look away
Much like a newborn babe
It doth happen every day

I look inside myself
And see my heart is black
I see my red door
I must have it painted black
Look now for no more day
Nor night, but that from hell
Then all must as they may
In darkness learn to dwell
No more doth blue spread o’er my green and wretched sea
