The Tiger Lillies are a band known for their unique and original sound that has captivated audiences around the world. The band was formed in 1989 by Martyn Jacques, the front man, songwriter, and founder of the group.
Martyn Jacques spent much of his twenties living in a flat above a brothel in London's Soho, where he would peep through his window at the buzz of Soho's lowlife. It was during this time that he began to develop his distinct musical style, drawing inspiration from the strange world around him.
In 1989, Jacques acquired his first accordion and The Tiger Lillies were formed shortly after. The band quickly gained a following for their dark, theatrical, and somewhat twisted music that defies categorization. Their sound is a mix of cabaret, vaudeville, punk, and gypsy music, with Jacques' haunting falsetto vocals adding to the eerie and otherworldly atmosphere of their music.
Over the years, The Tiger Lillies have released numerous albums and performed in cities all over the world, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. Their music has been described as both beautiful and grotesque, with lyrics that touch on themes of death, decay, and the darker side of human nature.
Despite their unconventional style and subject matter, The Tiger Lillies continue to push boundaries and challenge audiences with their music. Martyn Jacques' unique vision and talent as a songwriter have solidified the band's place as one of the most original and innovative acts in the music industry today.
