6ix9ine
Daniel Hernandez (born May 8, 1996), better known as 6ix9ine, is a New York-born half Mexican, half Puerto Rican rapper known for his aggressive musical style, viral antics, and outlandish look; sporting rainbow dyed hair, rainbow grills and chains, and over two hundred tattoos reading “69,” “Sixty Nine,” “Six Nine,” and other variations of his stage name.

According to his NY Tent Sale interview, 6ix9ine began writing songs as a teenager to entertain his friends. He went by names like Wallah Dan, Danny Loaf, and Tekashi69 before finally settling on 6ix9ine in 2017. The first song Tekashi ever published onto the internet was “Pimpin,” which gained the attention of Slovak artist Dalyb and his group Haha Crew after being posted on their Facebook page. 6ix9ine found his first industry friend in Dalyb, and he collaborated with Dalyb and Haha Crew on songs such as “Rollin Stones” and “Zeta Zero 0.5,” which helped Tekashi gain an early audience in Eastern European countries.

In 2017, Tekashi befriended Ohio rapper Trippie Redd, and introduced himself to the hip-hop world on a large scale for the first time in his collaboration with Trippie, “Poles1469.” The song was a massive viral hit, racking up over 100 million views on YouTube and becoming certified gold by February 2, 2018. This friendship abruptly ended after Trippie discovered the rumor 6ix9ine had pled guilty to one charge of “use of a child in a sexual performance” in 2015, a claim first expressed by ZillaKami during his fall out with 6ix9ine. The rumor, which turned out to be true, proved to be 6ix9ine’s main hindrance in finding his position as a respected mainstream artist.

6ix9ine caught his first break in October of 2017 with the release of his breakout hit single “GUMMO.” It was his biggest hit yet; the single reached the 1st position on the SoundCloud music charts for a week, it peaked at the 12th position on the Billboard Hot 100, and gained over 300 million streams combined from YouTube and beyond.

One month after being kidnapped and robbed by an ex-member of his management, Tekashi unleashed the single “FEFE” on July 22, 2018, featuring verses from Nicki Minaj and production from Murda Beatz. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the month of August 2018. The song has gained over half-a-billion views on YouTube and is to date Tekashi’s most played song on Spotify, with over 400 million plays.

Finally, 6ix9ine released “STOOPID,” the final single for his first studio album which he had now revealed the title of: DUMMY BOY. The song featured vocals (recorded via jail phone) of the incarcerated New York rapper Bobby Shmurda, and peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Though promised to release on November 23 2018, DUMMY BOY finally came out on November 27th, 2018, four days delayed due to Tekashi’s arrest for racketeering and firearms offenses on the 23rd. In January 2019, Tekashi pled guilty to all nine of his charges, including racketeering, conspiracy, firearms offenses and narcotics trafficking. His minimum sentence currently sits at at 47 years in federal prison, and he is awaiting sentencing (January 24 2020). These serious charges leave the future of Tekashi’s music career uncertain to say the least.
