Biography
Free was an iconic English rock band hailing from London, formed in the revolutionary musical epoch of 1968. As architects of some of the most memorable rock anthems, they etched their name in the annals of rock history, most notably with their 1970 hit "All Right Now," which became not just a chart-topping single but a staple of rock 'n' roll, revered for its raw power and catchy simplicity.
The quintet that made noise beyond their years disbanded in 1973, leaving behind a legacy that would influence generations of rock musicians. Paul Rodgers, the charismatic lead singer whose formidable voice defined the band's sound, continued his journey in the world of rock, taking center stage as frontman of the band Bad Company. His synergistic collaboration with Simon Kirke on drums persisted, with both carrying the torch of their musical prowess into their new band.
Paul Kossoff, the lead guitarist recognized for his mesmerizing guitar licks and soulful vibrato, embarked on a new musical venture with Back Street Crawler in 1975. Sadly, Kossoff's brilliant light was extinguished too soon when he tragically passed away from a pulmonary embolism in 1976 at the tender age of 25, leaving behind a musical void that many still mourn.
Bassist Andy Fraser, whose deft fingers and rhythmic innovations provided the backbone to Free's sound, went on to pursue new musical horizons with the formation of Sharks. His journey continued to impact the musical world, carrying on the spirit that was so emblematic of Free.
Although the journey of Free as a collective was a comet streaking across the rock firmament, their music endures. With "All Right Now" still electrifying airwaves and arenas, Free remains a touchstone of rock, embodying an era when music was as free as the name they bore.
