One of Poland’s greatest composers, Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994) wrote in a variety of genres and styles ranging from folk music to atonality to aleatory music. He served as a radio operator in World War II and was captured by the Nazis but escaped en route to a prison camp. Much of his early music was destroyed in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. Later in life, he supported the Solidarity movement, and after the Communist government’s overthrow, he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest honor.
