Lumberer Moses
Showed me his Washington wood
He took me to his cottage
And said "Isn't it good?"
But Lumberer Moses
Living all alone with his big broad axe
And his shaggy dog Rex
For his friend, for his own

Served me his wild mountain food
At the table, he just grinned
And said "Isn't it good?"
Then Lumberer Moses
Took his long old gun
And said "Well this is my father's gun
That I kept for my son"

He keeps his son in blue uniform
Smiling on the wall
Now he's yellow with the dust

He keeps his wife through the sleet or storm
Smiling on the wall
Now she's faded in the dust

He's done what he thinks is good
When the night comes, he looks back
And says "Oh I would if I could"
Then Lumberer Moses
His thoughts run in his dreams
And back to the good old days he runs
"Oh come back" he screams
