Allen Tate - CPH

0
Copied!
Nothing in translation
Fit just isn't right
Chase you through the streets at night

Unwritten rules and no emotion
Close up the doors, and close up your heads
Sweet young mothers of Tivoli Gardens
Not what you dreamed of, young in your bed

Golden children and passing hours
Sweet little girls who were named after flowers
Boys in the meadows who chase after them
Become fathers in turn like their fathers had been, oh

Quieter rooms and no emotion
Outran an ocean and half day of wait(?...)
Stray in the streetlight with nothing to pardon(?...)
Hang in the air 'til there's something to say

Heavy and hungry, dirty and sharpened
Born in the gardens with thin (?...)
I lay around and lose what I've guarded
'Til the girls in the flowers go riding away

Biography

Allen Tate was born on November 19, 1899, in Winchester, Kentucky. He attended Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, where he became a part of the group of Southern poets known as the “Fugitives”, which included notable writers such as Robert Penn Warren and John Crowe Ransom. After graduating, Tate taught at various institutions, including Kenyon College in Ohio, where he influenced future poets such as Robert Lowell and Randall Jarrell.

Throughout his career, Tate delved into various topics in his writing, including politics, religion, and the complexities of the human experience.

Allen Tate passed away on February 9, 1979, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential figures in American literature. His works continue to be studied and appreciated for their depth, insight, and contribution to the literary landscape of the 20th century.
