Blind Willie McTell - This is Not the Stove to Brown Your Bread

0
Copied!

{Female Singer}
Things been high and still going up
I'm going to get mine no matter what it cost

{Blind Willie McTell}
I'm the man and I'm the boss

{Female Singer}
I'm going to get what I want no matter what it cost
I just sent a man to the crazy house
He was big and bad like you
I'd taken all of his money and I throwed it away
And he didn't have on a real good shoe

{Blind Willie McTell}
Now woman, woman
You think a man like me
Would be that big a fool about you?
(Yes!)
You better see your doctor
Something is wrong with your head
This is not the stove to brown your bread
Now if you's lookin for me to give you my money when you say
Mama, I'm not goin' that way
Now you told me that your love turned off and on

{Female Singer}
Yes and if you ain't got no money
I turn my love off and I'm gone

{Blind Willie McTell}
You bettеr see your doctor
Something is wrong with your head
This is no the stovе to brown your bread
Now to get my money, mama
This is how you got to be

{Female Singer}
How I got to be?

{Blind Willie McTell}
With both of your legs cut off above your knee
The two (?...) and the German flu
Lice gonna be runnin' up and down your back
Playin' nacky-do-do-do
No hair, no eye, no teeth in your head
You gonna show me a (?...) that your great Gramama did
Now before we married you said I was the best
A week after that we lived like two birds in one nest
Six months after that, I could see you with a frown
If I didn't take all my money and bring you half of the town

{Female Singer}
They call you a boy, and that's your name

{Blind Willie McTell}
But believe me mama, I got a Cadillac frame
So you better see your doctor
Something is wrong with your head
This is not the stove to brown your bread, I said
This is not the stove to brown your bread

Blind Willie McTell

The meaning of the song

Biography

Blind Willie McTell, born William Samuel McTier in 1898, was a pioneering blues guitarist known for writing enduring standards such as “Statesboro Blues” and “Southern Can is Mine”. Despite being born blind in one eye, he lost his sight completely by the time he was a young man. McTell showed musical prodigy at a young age, excelling in playing harmonica and accordion before transitioning to the guitar, specifically the acoustic 12-string which became his signature instrument.

After his mother passed away in the 1920s, McTell was left to pursue a life as a wandering songster, recording for Victor Records in 1927 under various pseudonyms before settling on the stage name Blind Willie McTell. His laid-back style, tenor voice, and unique 12-string guitar sound made him a standout in the blues and ragtime music scene. Despite some success with recording deals, McTell's career was cut short due to poor sales, complications with diabetes, and ongoing struggles with alcoholism.

However, McTell continued to busk and in 1956, a record store manager in Atlanta discovered him and convinced him to record a few songs, which were later released as the Last Session in 1962. By 1957, McTell had found a new calling as a Baptist preacher at Mt. Zion Church in Atlanta, but sadly, he suffered a stroke in 1959 and passed away at the age of 61.

After his death, Blind Willie McTell's influence continued to grow, with modern rock artists such as The White Stripes, The Allman Brothers Band, and Bob Dylan paying tribute to him in their work. A blues bar in Atlanta is named in his honor, showcasing local blues musicians every night. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout his life, Blind Willie McTell's music and legacy have endured, cementing his status as a legendary figure in the blues genre.
