People scurrying left and right. People living lives. People on the phone. People in suits. People begging for change. The boy emerges from the crowd with the stride of somebody who knows where they are going, but isn’t in a particular rush to get there
A woman with big brown eyes follows close behind. He holds her hand gently, and says something to make her laugh
They pass an empty storefront where he catches a glimpse of his reflection in the window. There is a quiet acceptance in his eyes. A knowing that, while you can’t always change the world, you can always find peace within yourself
The sound of sirens in the distance
The couple makes knowing eye contact and the boy ducks into a sidestreet. He tosses off his coat and hoodie, and a bright red cape unfurls itself into the wind
He springs off his feet and soars over a skyline of skyscrapers and apartment buildings. Over stores and housing projects and penthouses. Over Soho and Harlem. Over his fears and self loathing and insecurities. Into the sunset. Into his future
