Dark Tranquillity is a Swedish melodic death metal band that is considered one of the pioneers of the Gothenburg metal scene. Formed in 1989, the band has maintained a mostly consistent lineup throughout their career. Originally formed by guitarist Niklas Sundin, drummer Anders Jivarp, and vocalist Anders Fridén, they were later joined by rhythm guitarist Mikael Stanne. When Fridén left the band, Stanne took over as the lead vocalist, a role he has maintained ever since.

In 1998, guitarist Fredrik Johansson left the band, leading bassist Martin Henriksson to switch to guitar and Michael Nicklasson to join as the new bassist. At this time, keyboardist Martin Brändström was also added to the lineup. This lineup remained stable for many years until Nicklasson's departure in 2008.

Dark Tranquillity is known for their unique spelling of their band name, often being misspelled as "Dark Tranquility" in the United States. In addition to their music, guitarist Niklas Sundin is also known for his graphic design work, creating album artwork for the band as well as founding his own design studio.

With a career spanning over three decades, Dark Tranquillity continues to be a driving force in the melodic death metal genre, known for their intricate melodies, aggressive riffs, and thought-provoking lyrics.
