Cabaret Voltaire were an English industrial and electronic band from Sheffield who were at the forefront of the early industrial scene in the mid-1970s. The original members were Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk, and Chris Watson. Watson left the group in 1981, leaving the remaining members to turn in a more pop-oriented direction. The single “Sensoria” off 1984’s Micro-Phonies, along with its music video, gained Cabaret Voltaire their highest amount of popularity yet.

In the early ‘90s, the group took a turn into a new direction toward house and techno, marking the complete departure from the earlier industrial sound. Cabaret Voltaire broke up in 1995, but was restarted by Kirk in 2009, who continued to use the Cabaret Voltaire name until his death in 2021.
