a-ha - Forest For The Trees

0
Copied!
I don’t live in a time
Where the truth prevails
Things just seem to happen
On an escalating scale
They play you for a fool
To weaken your resolve
Drowning you in details
To make you miss the whole

Sunbeams & forget-me-nots
Beads of amber, parking lots
From your view you see a lot
What you really see
Forest for the trees

I don’t live in a world
Big on clarity
The way it’s coming at us
So relentlessly
Where does one thing end
And the next one start
And where to begin
To keep it all apart

Sunbeams & forget-me-nots
Keys are in the flower pot
A rider brings his horse to trot
All is lost on me
Forest for the trees
Sunbeams & forget-me-nots
Awoken by a rifle shot
From your view you see a lot
But never the whole piece
Forest for the trees

We’re running out of movie-plots
Your stomach’s tied into a knot
Crackles as the needle drops
On a somber melody
A heartbreak elegy
Unsurprisingly
Called ‘Forest for the trees’

The meaning of the song

Biography

A-ha is a Norwegian synth-pop group formed in 1982 by frontman Morten Harket, keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, and guitarist Paul Waaktaar. Harket was initially lured away from his blues/soul group Soldier Blue by Furuholmen, and the trio quickly formed a bond that would lead to international success.

In 1984, a-ha released their debut single "Take On Me" to massive success in Norway. However, it was the re-recorded version of the song released alongside their debut album Hunting High And Low in 1985 that catapulted them to international stardom. The groundbreaking music video, featuring a unique blend of pencil-sketch animation and live-action shots, helped propel the song to #1 in eleven countries.

The follow-up single "The Sun Always Shines On TV" continued their success, reaching the top 20 in eleven countries. The band's debut album became a hit in twelve countries and garnered numerous awards, including several Billboard Music Video Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy) Awards.

Despite their initial success, a-ha struggled to maintain their popularity in the US after the release of their first two albums. However, they continued to find success overseas with their next two albums, and even recorded the theme song for the James Bond movie "The Living Daylights."

In the 1990s, a-ha faced commercial struggles with their album "Memorial Beach" and eventually split in 1994. They reunited in 1998 for a performance at the Nobel Peace Prize concert, which led to a new wave of success with the release of "Summer Moved On."

Between 2002 and 2009, a-ha released three more albums that found success in Norway, Austria, and Germany. They also returned to the US for the first time since 1986 and performed for crowds of over 120,000 in Oslo.

Despite announcing a farewell tour in 2010, a-ha reunited in 2015 and continued to release music and tour the world. Their album "Cast In Steel" reached the top 5 in five countries, and they released an acoustic set for MTV as well as a live album.

Overall, a-ha's legacy as a pioneering synth-pop group with international success and a devoted fanbase has solidified their place in music history.
