The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara - Love In the Time Of Pestilence

Lyrics by Daphne Ang

Mankind has always seen the end of eras
As a time of peril and doom
Today, we await the start of a new world
With the same trepidation
Never before in modern history
Has humanity experienced such levels of alienation
Never before have we become so distant
So silent, so isolated from each other
Our cities are crowded
But we are exilеd to the closets of our homes
Bound by a crippling fеar
That bleakness is the only certainty

A plague has brought our world to its knees
And with it, the complete erosion of human modes of existence
Millions suffer, and will die alone, many in vain
We watch the ripening of world dissolution, at our very windows
Of all that is known and certain to man
Only death and decay will prevail

The greatest achievement of modern man
Is the construction of an interconnected world
But in this time of a global pandemic
It is that very connection that will be the cause of our doom
We will suffer the curse of our connectivity
But what we really need is equity
Will humanity rise up
Or will we wallow in the hazy bliss of our ignorance
Will we shun the unflattering glare of truth
Leaving nothing bare
Our weakness, once concealed
In its light, all is revealed

One world
One people
One disease
It's in the air for you
It's in the air for me

One world
One people
One plague
It's in the air for you
It's in the air for me

It's in the air for you
It's in the air for me
One world
One people
It's in the air for you
It's in the air for me

The world is beautiful, but has a disease called mankind
For somehow this is tyranny's affliction, to trust no friends
The doctor is to be feared more than the contagion
Time is a herb that cures all illnesses

But in the face of pain, there are no heroes
Will we wait for the bodies to pile
To sow the seeds in the soil so fertile
Humanity will be half dead before we understand this disease
If only we can turn back time

Why do we always chose to view history behind rose tinted glasses
Will no one pause to listen to the words of our forebears
They remind us like clockwork
We died so you won't make the same mistakes again

Casting a deaf ear, dumb mind, blind eye
Like pearls cast to swine
Deaf ear, dumb mind, blind eye
Casting pearls to swine

The greatest achievement of modern man
Is the construction of an interconnected world
But in this time of a global pandemic
It is that very connection that will be the cause of our doom
We will suffer the curse of our connectivity
But what we really need is equity
Will humanity rise up
Or will we wallow in the hazy bliss of our ignorance
Will we shun the unflattering glare of truth
Leaving nothing bare
Our weakness, once concealed
In its light, all is revealed

The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara

The meaning of the song

Biography

Hailed as “pioneers of a new form of expression” through the performance of poetry in music, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara (TCOMAS) are a UK-based duo comprising Daphne Ang (Vocals, Piano, Keyboard) who hails from Singapore, and Andrea Papi (Guitar, Bass, Vocals) from Italy. Based out of the heart of London’s vibrant rock scene in Camden Town, London, The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara came together in London in early 2020 to record their debut album, “Full Spectrum” (released on 26 February 2021).

Drawing inspiration from many sources stemming from Devin Townsend and Tool through to Kraftwerk and Russian Circles, as well as absorbing the poetry of Virginia Woolf and Jim Morrison, TCOMAS admirably strive to fill a gap in music by bringing literature and history together into an arena where rock and metal meets electronica.

Their musical and lyrical themes are very much rooted in the duo’s interests in classical literature and theatre, as well as in the fields of philosophy, history, and psychology. Their musical innovations are a result of a collaborative process beginning with the composition and arrangement of the music, which Samara then casts into verbal form. By setting a poetic/narrative text within the musical composition in lyric mode which is spoken, recited and narrated instead of sung, this inter-artistic mode of transfer goes beyond placing brief interludes of spoken word over an instrumental composition.
