Best Frenz is a side project by Daniel Armbruster of Joywave and Jason Suwito of Sir Sly, who met during the Joywave and Sir Sly coheadline tour in fall 2018 (also referred to as “Slywave”). They began working on the project during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, when all tours and shows were canceled or postponed. The band name is inspired by how Daniel Armbruster would call Jason Suwito his best friend during the stage banter of their coheadline tour, which ended up sparking a true friendship.
To introduce the side project, Daniel Armbruster said:

I’m sure at least a few of you recall the new infamous Joywave + Sir Sly #Slywave coheadline tour in the fall of 2018. Many nights on stage (especially when I could see Suwito watching from front of house) I would deliver a monologue about how much Jason Suwito’s friendship meant to me. How we’d been best friends for years, etc, etc. But like much of my stage banter (“thank you, Florida!”), it was a lie. Truth is, Jason is very quiet and reserved. We didn’t interact much at the beginning of the tour. He was a real #shyguy. But since that time, I’m pleased to report that we have developed a true friendship. One that actually does mean a lot to me. And now when I look back at that tour, I think of myself as a prophet, not a liar. I spoke our friendship into existence. So when everything got canceled a few months ago, we decided to begin work on a side project together. The first of these songs will be available Friday, with a full EP arriving 7/24. And after our first 5 band name suggestions were rejected by our enormous legal teams, the obvious became clear. We are truly what we have always been…Best Frenz (awwww).
