Mike Rutherford was born on October 2, 1950, in Guildford, Surrey, England. He developed a passion for music at a young age and learned to play the guitar and bass guitar.

In 1967, Rutherford co-founded the progressive rock band Genesis along with fellow schoolmates Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Anthony Phillips. Over the years, Genesis achieved international success with hit albums such as "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" and "Invisible Touch." Rutherford's innovative guitar and bass playing contributed significantly to the band's sound.

In addition to his work with Genesis, Rutherford also formed the successful side project, Mike + the Mechanics, in 1985. The band's debut album included the hit single "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)" and they went on to release several more albums, with Rutherford serving as the primary songwriter and guitarist.
